Group picture with the Karmapa at the Tibetan Football Championship matches

On a hot day the XVII Gyalwang Karmapa came to the stadium to watch the second Gyalyum Chenmo Memorial Gold Cup in North America. More than a thousand Tibetans had come to support their teams. The game took place between last year’s winner the Cholsum Football Club from Toronto and the Team Tibet from New York and New Jersey. The XVII Gyalwang Karmapa greeted those present and spoke of the importance of Tibetans meeting outside of Tibet and establishing good connections so that friendships could develop. He was delighted with the activity of His Holiness, the Dalai Lama, in making this event possible. This brought him to a further point he often talks about, namely the positive relationships between the three great regions in Tibet and between the different religious traditions. Tibetan culture and religion, he said, depend on Tibetans’ ability to maintain harmonious relationships. The unity of the three regions is extremely important. Without them, the old divisiveness would lead to stress in the community. Everyone, therefore, has to put their shoulder to the wheel so that peace and well-being can happen within Tibetan society. He concluded his talk with the aspiration that this would, indeed, come about.
