The Kamalashila Institute® for Buddhist Studies and Meditation in the Eifel Monastery at Langenfeld near Mayen

The Institute is the seat of His Holiness, the XVII Karmapa, Ogyen Trinley Dorje, in Europe and a national educational institution for the study of higher Buddhist philosophy and the training of meditation. In addition it is a meeting place between Buddhism, western science and other religions. Events like ”Hospice Work and Terminal Care“ or ”Buddhism and Psychotherapy“ are being organised.

In 1981, the Institute was founded at Wachendorf castle at Mechernich/Eifel. It became a place of numerous events with the highest masters of the Karma Kagyu tradition. In August 1999 its seat moved to the Eifel monastery at Langenfeld near Mayen. In the very center of the Eifel a modern, monastic seminar house came into being overseen by Acharya Lama Soenam Rabye and Acharya Lama Kelzang Wangdi. The spiritual director is the Buddhist scholar Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche.

Programme & Contact

The programme of the Kamala Institute addresses a wide public including first-time visitors and people without any meditation experience as well as people having long been occupied with Buddhism, are practicing themselves or regard themselves to be Buddhists. Every month many different courses take place like basic courses, retreats (meditation courses) and practice offers of the Karma Kagyu school as well as of other schools of Tibetan Buddhism. Course offers to topics like, e.g., stress reduction, mindfulness, relaxing techniques, body therapy or Buddhist psychology complete the instruction repertoire.The successful course series MEDITATION AND EVERYDAY LIFE  takes place in Cologne.
